Choir Event Cancelled in Shelbyville

The performance by the Indian Creek High School choir scheduled for tomorrow and Sun. at First United Methodist Church in Shelbyville, has been canceled. No rescheduling date has been made.

Pension Overhaul Case Begins March 11

The Illinois Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the state’s landmark pension-overhaul case beginning March 11. Arguments begin that afternoon at 2:30 in the high court’s chamber in downtown Springfield.

Corn and Soybean Yields

The Illinois Farm Bureau says thanks to technology improvements last fall’s harvest was an historic crop – the highest corn yields were in Macon County. The Bureau reports the highest soybean yields were in Piatt County.

Learn About Soup in Monticello

Home and Community Education offers a lesson on soup from 9:30 to 11 this Tues. morning at the Piatt County Cooperative Extension Office in Monticello. The only thing you’re asked to bring is your soup knowledge to share with others.

Sheriff’s Association Scholarships

The Illinois Sheriff’s Association will award over $53,000 in college scholarships during the 2015-16 academic year. They’re for tuition, books and fees. Shelby County Sheriff, Don Koonce, will award a $500 scholarship.

Drug Overdoses in Champaign

Champaign police are concerned about a string of 10 heroin overdoses in just the past week – an unusually high number. Police say the overdoses may be from a deadly form of heroin being sold to drug users.

Two Cases of TB in Macon County

The MCHD has confirmed two cases of tuberculosis in Macon County. One of the cases was at St. Mary’s Hospital in Decatur. TB is a bacterial infection that attacks the body’s organs, usually the lungs.

Redbird Rookies Coming to the DISC

Redbird Rookies is a ‘Cardinals Care’ free baseball league for boys and girls ages 5 to 13 who have no prior experience playing ball. Registration begins on March 5 at the DISC – the season starts May 30.

Monticello Fighting Hunger, an event that will package 100,000 meals for area food pantries, is this ld Sat. evening at Monticello Middle School. If you have some time and would like to help out, just show up at the school between 5 and 7.

Woman Dies in Highrise Apartment Fire

The Sangamon County coroner says Olive Cundiff, 93, in that highrise apartment fire at Sangamon Towers in Springfield. Three other residents were injured. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
