The Fairview Tennis Complex in Decatur opens Mon. Hours of the complex are Mon. through Fri. 8 to 8, and 8 to 4 on weekends. There’s no charge on a walk-up basis to play.

Staff Promotions at Millikin University

Millikin University has make some promotions effective Aug. 1. Mary Black has been promoted to associate professor of theatre and dance, Tony Magagna has been promoted to associate professor of English, and David Horn has been promoted to professor of biology.

Problems During the Celtic Festival in Sangamon County

Sangamon County authorities say several tents and trailers were damaged during the Celtic Festival in Chatham. Thousands of dollars worth of property and merchandise were stolen.

Decatur Arts Council Awards Several Grants

Decatur Area Arts Council has awarded several grants in its May granting period, including to the Community Foundation, First Baptist Church, Macon-Piatt Special Education, and RCC. The next grant deadline is Oct. 1.

Logan County Road Closed for Two Months

Beginning Mon, 2200th St. east of Hartsburg in Logan County will be closed for a bridge replacement. Construction will take 2 months. The road will be closed to traffic during that time.

New Drug Policy in Mt. Zion Schools

The Mount Zion school board has approved a new policy that requires high school students to submit to drug testing in order to take part in various school-related activities – dances, sports, field trips, and the like. Students would be randomly selected to take the tests.

MidState Cup this Weekend in Decatur

The MidState Soccer Club hosts the MidState Cup tomorrow through Sun. as 137 boys’ and girls’ teams compete. Games begin at 5:45 tomorrow and 8 Sat. morning. Admission is free. has all the info.

Peace Rally Held in Decatur

Dozens are mourning the death of Mishari Halbrook, 28, who was gunned down at Club Maxey in Decatur. A peace rally was held at the nightclub to initiate a new push for unity in Decatur’s inner city.
